Unloop is a space where people explore the patterns, wounds, and fears that shape their lives. That work requires honesty — and honesty requires safety. We take our responsibility to the people who use this app seriously, and that responsibility extends beyond data privacy to their physical and emotional wellbeing.
Every message sent within Unloop is scanned in real time for language indicating distress, self-harm ideation, or immediate danger. This happens before the message reaches the AI, allowing the system to respond appropriately based on the severity of what is expressed.
We use a three-level framework:
The person uses language suggesting past thoughts or indirect references to death or self-harm (e.g. "I wanted to die when I was younger"). The session continues with care. The AI weaves crisis resources naturally into its response without interrupting the therapeutic work.
The person expresses current thoughts of suicide or self-harm (e.g. "I want to hurt myself," "I've been thinking about ending it"). The AI pauses therapeutic work, asks directly "Are you safe right now?", and provides crisis resources clearly and warmly. A prominent resource banner appears in the interface with tap-to-call links.
The person indicates an active plan or immediate intent (e.g. "I have a plan," "I'm doing it tonight"). The AI suspends the session entirely, responds with urgent warmth, and directs the person to call 911 or 988 immediately. A high-visibility emergency banner with one-tap calling appears. No therapeutic conversation continues until the person is safe.
When crisis language is detected, Unloop surfaces the following resources directly within the session interface with tap-to-call functionality on mobile devices:
Unloop is an AI-powered emotional coaching tool designed to help people identify unconscious patterns that shape their behavior. It is not a clinical service, a crisis intervention program, or a substitute for professional mental health care.
When Unloop is deployed under a community license, the same safety protocols apply to every member regardless of how they access the app. Organizations cannot disable or modify crisis detection. The Strong Hearts Native Helpline is surfaced by default in all tribal deployments alongside the standard 988 and Crisis Text Line resources.
Organizational administrators do not have visibility into individual session content — including any crisis flags that may have been triggered. This preserves member privacy while ensuring the safety system operates consistently for every user.
We are prepared to discuss customized safety workflows with tribal health programs that have specific community protocols, including coordination with tribal behavioral health staff where appropriate and with explicit user consent.
